Tree of Life hair clip.

The challenge should I choose to accept it was to make a Tree of Life hair clip for a customer in the USA.
Well the challenge was on. There was many possible problems with this, I was not sure if I could actually do it.
First things first,
choose the glass,
Streaky green glass for Tree of life hair clip
the customer had already requested streaky green so that was the easy bit.
The idea was to make the approximate shape by using a fibre kiln material
making of Tree of life hair clip
Here is a piece!
Then, cut the desired shape out, as the next picture shows.
Sorry about this but I seem to have a few picture missing. But basically I cut the glass in fit inside them shape. One long strip and two half moons pieces. I then repeated this with the top glass. Fitted all the pieces into the cut out and fired for the first time.
Once the firing cycles had been completed, I removed the glass from the fibre material, cleaned up the edges to reduce de-vitrification on the glass for the second firing. Like I said, I fired this cleaned glass again for the second time.
I now had a flat, streaky correct shaped glass cabochon.
The next stage was to bend the glass.
With a 4" square sheet of copper, curved to fit the curvature of the hair clip. See the following picture, although the picture does not show the 5 coats of kiln wash to stop the glass sticking to the copper.

I then fired the cabochon on a slumping cycle, not as hot as fusing the glass but enough to let the glass fall into to right shape over the copper

Once this had cooled,

Decal for Tree of life hair clip
I applied the entwined Tree of Life decal onto the center of the cabochon. And fired it once again.

After leaving the new creation to cool completely.
The cabochon was glued to the curved hair clip with E6000 glue.
Hair clip base
Then totally left alone for 48 hours (glue drying time).
I presented it in a beautiful heart shaped box, all ready to be posted over to the USA.

Then a few weeks later I receive this picture.

I was so please it all worked out in the end. I have missed a few points out as an alchemist can't give away all his secrets.
A massive thank you to my customer for letting me accept this challenge and for ordering my hand made jewellery.
Thanks for reading.

Fashion Jewellery, Earrings, Bracelets, Rings, Hair Clips and Pendants at Darlington Sunday Peoples Market

For all my readers that have not had chance to visit me at The Darlington Sunday Peoples Market.
To start with this first picture shows a collection of new designs and creations of Rings and Bracelets.
The following pictures show off my design to the best of my photographic ability.
I am always trying to show off my work to there best but I often cannot find display stands that I like or that I can afford. So the bracelet display is another creation of mine (being a ex worker, I enjoy doing things like this). All it took was a few scraps of MDF a bit of paint and my imagination to see the end product from a pile of unwanted bits and pieces.
This next picture shows the new large cabochon design Rings. They look great on another hand made bits of scrap Ring display stand. A couple of bits of perspex and a off cut of MDF plus some paint again and a bit of time and imagination again and there you go. A very cheap Ring stand to my requirements.
Here is a collected view of Rings, Hair Clips and a few Bracelets.
And finally, me! The creator! I love making making almost anything especially when someone else like what I have made.
And that was just a snippet of time at this lovely street market in Darlington on the first Sunday of every month, yes even the winter months.
If you decide to visit in the winter months wear thermals. lol. It's a great day any time of the year. Great atmosphere, lovely people and unique goods to get for yourself a friend or a loved one.
Hope to see you there and if you have read this and decided to make a visit, why not introduce yourself and say you follow my blog.
Anyway, that's about it for now.
Thanks for stopping by.

Zentangle becomes Dichroic Glass Fashion Jewellery

When Zentangle becomes Dichroic Glass Fashion Jewellery.

I was introduced to Zentangle art a couple of years ago through a friend on Facebook. At the time I thought, oooow now that would look nice on my Dichroic glass Fashion Jewellery.
It's taken me this long to get around to doing something with this idea but I got there in the end.
It happened quite by accident.
Whilst searching the web for some new decals to fire into my designs I came across a company that did porcelain works. After trawling through lots of twee pictures of scenery and chocolate box scenes I came across this Zentangle design which sparked my old grey matter again on the Zentangle Fashion Jewellery Pendants
Well I just had to have a go at these.

This picture shows a small section of the Zentangle design.

The following four pictures show the initial fired cabochons of
dichroic glass in my chosen colours.
Ow yes, there are a couple of extra ones that will stay as they are
because I just loved the silvery sparkling nature of them.

Once I had chosen and cut the part of the Zentangle design that I thought would look best on these colours. The pendants complete with design then had a second firing.
Once cooled and out of the kiln I was amazed at the outcome.
They are gorgeous, if I say so myself LOL.

And here are just a few of the finished designs with pendant bails attached and waiting for there new owners.

These and more designs will be listed on my web site as soon as I can but you can find these and lots more on my Facebook page. I have two prices for my pendants. £15 for a pendant with a decal fired into it and £10 without decal, these prices may change in the future and p&p to the UK is £2
and to the rest of the world is £5.

Thanks for reading, if you have time. Take a look at some of my other posts. There are funny ones, daft ones serious ones and posts where I just wanted to post.

Making of Fashion Jewellery, Part 1.

I thought I would share with my readers how some of my fashion jewellery is made.
I should start off at the beginning, the problem a couple of years ago was that I wanted to hand fired very small pieces of glass but the cost of gas bottles, tubing and burner was just crazy for my shallow pockets.
I then had a brain storm or something. I bought a very cheap butane gas torch from the local supermarket. You know the type, it's the one that you use in the kitchen for burning the sugar on deserts. mmmm now where's the pudding we promised ourselves tonight. lol
Anyway, I'll try and type while salivating :-)
To start with I used my trusty mosaic cutter and cut a few 1/4" square chunks of Dichroic glass. Then place them on a old broken (doesn't have to be broken but I know there is always a use for everything at sometime) tile, raised it off my workbench and set the gas alight.
oooowwww fire! man always likes playing with fire :o)
I think these picture explains it far better than my words except that's it's really great fun to do and the glass transforms in front of your eye's.

Finished cabochons in the background and on in the process of being hand fired.
As above but from a different angle
and again.
I just love my Alchemy!!!!

You might be wondering what these very small cabochons are going to use for. Well some get used for small stud earrings but these were destined for double cabochon rings.
And here's one that I've just made:
I think the outcome is really amazing and when you see it on someones finger they look even better.
This form of hand firing is really satisfying, you are more interactive with the glass. Watching it flow in different directions as you change the direction of the heat.

Making Fashion Jewellery, Part 2 will follow in a few weeks so please call back and if you have any questions leave a comment and I will get back to you, with a answer if I can or directions on where to find that answer.
Thanks for reading
